Anacortes, Washington-based MOUNT EERIE is the songwriting outlet of
Phil Elvrum, whose psych-pop releases under the moniker of THE
MICROPHONES delighted listeners and critics alike with their detailed
lo-fi production as well as their gently poetic narrative arcs. A
luminary of the K RECORDS family, Elvrum has been involved in much of
the musical outpouring from the Pacific Northwest, from OLD TIME
RELIJUN to D+.

(SCENE) is pleased to present a special Wednesday evening ALL AGES
show featuring a full set from MOUNT EERIE, with additional sets by
Canadian singer-songwriter JULIE DOIRON (formerly of indie rock
noise-pop quartet ERIC'S TRIP), and Doiron's side-project with fellow
musician Dick Morello, CALM DOWN, IT'S MONDAY.

Also featured Wednesday evening will be Lansing's own indie-folk
septet FRONTIER RUCKUS, fresh off their appearance at the CMJ Showcase
and heralding the release of their debut full-length CD "The Orion
Songbook" on Ann Arbor-based QUITE SCIENTIFIC RECORDS.

Due to limited space at the gallery, advance tickets are encouraged,
as remaining space will be offered on a first come, first served basis
for this special engagement.

(SCENE) Announces "Exchange"

Exchange Exhibit

Exchange is an exhibit featuring new artworks by ten artists. Art exists inside of a network. When we view artwork, we view the friendships and partnerships that informed and sustained it. We see it through the lens of our own experience and memories. It would be impossible not to make this most basic exchange.

Artists featured in the exhibit include Chicago-based painter Nick Butcher, East Lansing-based mixed media artist Aaron Curtner, Lansing-based sculptor Cody Hinze, East Lansing-based printmaker Kimberly Lavon, Chicago-based painter Nadine Nakanishi, Bath-based mixed media painter Robert Park, Detroit-based collage artist Teresa Petersen, Detroit-based painter Cedric Tai, Lansing-based painter Anthony Vasquez, and Ann Arbor-based artist Adam Winnie.

There will be an Opening Reception Friday, September 5, from 6-9 PM, featuring sounds by DJ Tor2 and food donated by the vendors of the Lansing City Market. The exhibit will continue through Sunday, October 12.

Saturday, September 13

ALL AGES, $5
[doors at 7:00]

There's a great show this weekend, please share the news! Stage favorite Chris Bathgate is rumored to be bringing a full band. The Ann Arbor-based songwriter blurs many borders with his highly personal iconography and textural word sense. The evening's music will also include the lilting sepia folkscape of fellow Ann Arbor band Anna Ash and The Family Tree. Joining Bathgate and Ash will be Lansing's own classically-tinted folk combo Head and Toe as well as acoustic indie sextet The Hallows.

Preceding the evening's musical performance will be a special benefit poster sale beginning at 4:00 PM on Saturday. Unique posters and fliers from (SCENE)'s past will be available for $1, $2, and Donation. The sale will continue until 7:00 PM or while supplies last. All sales will benefit (SCENE)'s programming. Check out our music show archives for lots of examples of past poster art by local artists.

(SCENE) Announces "Epicenter," an exhibit of Lansing-Area Artists, Opening Friday June 27, 6-9 PM

Epicenter Exhibit

Thunderstorms, computer crashes, new art, oh my!

Despite some setbacks of the "life happens" variety, (SCENE) will unveil our latest exhibit "Epicenter" on Friday, June 27 with a public reception from 6-9 PM featuring new works by seventeen artists from the Greater Lansing area. Epicenter's call-for-entries resulted in a flood of excellent submissions, and the gallery is filled to the brim with the creative output of artists Josh Ardis, Juanita Baldwin, Dorothy Brooks, Tim Casey Jr., Kerry Clark, Chris Corneal, Jillane Dumdei, Jessica Klumpp Held, Jane Kramer, Tim Lane, Randy Maidlow, Alex Nichols, Tiffany Norman, Mike Pixley, Jules Schmuker, Sally Martin Stewart, and Krys Tourtois. Based on the number of overall artist entries, we could hold 2 or 3 area-specific exhibits like this in a row. It underscores our curatorial conviction that Lansing, despite its sleepy industrial surface, conceals an undertow of vision and talent we would be more than happy to drown in.

As such, we have appropriated and repurposed the image of a grenade to symbolize the exciting potential under our noses. This original graphic was created by Chris Van Wyck of Ciesa Design. Once an image of violence, the only violence this new right-brained grenade intends is against the notion that there is "no good art" in mid-Michigan. In fact, there is so much good art in mid-Michigan that we have no hope of fitting even a fraction of it in our gallery! Naysayers, receive your come-uppance!

The opening reception will feature musical performances by local folk-indie favorites Falcorps as well as turntable veteran DJ Chris Clark.

ARMS AND SLEEPERS / SUNLIGHT ASCENDING / SPECTRAL MORNINGS Saturday, August 16

ARMS AND SLEEPERS
SUNLIGHT ASCENDING
SPECTRAL MORNINGS

Saturday, August 16
8:00 PM
ALL AGES, $5
[DOORS AT 7:00]

(SCENE) is pleased to host the return of Amhurst, Massachusetts-based ARMS AND SLEEPERS, a duo who travels with a full-time video projectionist. Arms And Sleepers, who can be alternately described as "cinematic" and "transcendent indie-electronic," has been praised by Oregon's Eugene Weekly for their wonderful 2007 full-length CD Black Paris 86: “Arms and Sleepers’ music is about evoking stories from the subtle disintegration and regenerations of life, capturing fleeting moments when humanity reaches a crescendo but there’s no one there to witness it.”

Make sure you're there on August 16 to witness it.

The members of Troy/Clawson-based instrumental indie/shoegaze band SUNLIGHT ASCENDING are all between the ages of 13-17, yet the band has created quite a stir with their Mogwai-esque sonic constructions. Having recently completed a self-titled 5 song EP, the band displays a sensibility akin to the more ambient side of Godspeed You Black Emperor! or the more distorted and propulsive side of Kranky artists like Jessamine. Part of an increasingly sophisticated set of young bands emerging from the Detroit suburbs (such as The Muldoons and The Displays), Sunlight Ascending has been featured at the Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit's celebrated Sonic Lullabyes Festival with such acts as Auburn Lull, Rx Gibbs, Soundpool, Indian Guides, and Kindle.

Beginning the evening is the not-to-be-missed Grand Rapids-based experimental electronica/shoegaze trio SPECTRAL MORNINGS, whom URB Magazine hailed for their "quality sounds, choppy drums and ethereal explorations" as part of their "Next 1000" list for 2007. Boasting members from such like-minded side projects as Conifer Rock and Centre (both of Square Root Music notoriety, a label which refers to their sound as "bionic pop" on its website), Spectral Mornings particular brand of electronica is aimed straight at the brain, via melodic hints and groovy allegations.
