What better way to count down the 12 days of Christmas? No singing required! What is this, you might ask?

Written by downtown NYC composer Phil Kline, Unsilent Night is an outdoor ambient music piece for an infinite number of boomboxes. When performed in the confines of a city, Unsilent Night reverberates off the buildings and streets, resulting in a drifting cloud of ethereal undulating sound. In effect, performers become a single element in a two-block-long stereo system. The Village Voice describes Unsilent Night as "a marvelously fluid, traveling spatial sound sculpture that disintegrates and reforms at nearly every stop light." Time Out calls the event "an electro-happening" and depicts the music as "a winter wonderland of shimmering sleigh bells, chimes and grand chorales."

In East Lansing, the Unsilent Night tradition has been carried on by a diverse collection of participants, anchored by the students of the MSU College of Music, and including participants from Lansing and Ann Arbor. This year, we’re looking to get lots more people involved from the MSU, and EL/Lansing/Okemos community. Want to get hip to the holiday spirit with our boombox symphony? Download your part of the music at unsilentnight.com/download (burn to CD or MP3 that you can play aloud on any ol’ contraption!). Also be sure to visit Scenemetrospace.com for further details, or contact the organizer, Geoff Deibel, for more information. Hoping to see everyone at our hometown gallery, Scene Metrospace in East Lansing on December 11 at 7 pm! We’ll take an hour to organize, hand out tapes/CDs and let people check out the great exhibits at Scene Metrospace. The parade begins at 8 pm sharp!! So dig your old boombox out of the closet, and bring it along! You can even play the music off your iphone!

Since its debut in 1992, Unsilent Night has become a cult holiday tradition in NY and around the world, drawing crowds of up to 1,500 participants. This year will see repeat presentations in San Francisco, Philadelphia, San Diego, Vancouver BC, Middlesbrough (England) and Sydney, Australia, as well as the first ever performances in Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Baltimore, Charleston, Rochester, Milledgeville (Georgia), and Banff (Alberta, Canada). In February 2006, a new version of Unsilent Night was presented at the Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, as part of a sound art festival in the Alps.

OMG Is Coming to SCENE

<img style="float:left; The two bassoonists make up the chamber ensemble Tuple, and will present a concert of avant-garde music for two bassoons at East Lansing's (SCENE) Metrospace on Thursday, October 22 as part of their fall tour, which also includes appearances at the University of Michigan and Northwestern University.

Tuple's virtuosic repertoire—which includes music by Dutch composers Louis Andriessen and Chiel Meijering, Russian Sofia Gubaidulina, and Americans Michael Daugherty and Marc Mellits—spans a melodic, timbral and stylistic range of surprising breadth. The music is by turns edgy, humorous and transcendent, and makes extraordinary demands on the players in terms of technique, stamina and breath control.

The duo is used to the fact that most of their audience members have never heard two bassoons playing together outside of the symphony orchestra. Tuple is working to change that by performing in clubs, concert and art venues. They also challenge the notion that contemporary classical music is difficult for audiences to relate to.

“We may perform modern music, but that doesn't mean that an indie rock fan, a classical music lover or a die-hard metal-head won't each find something to connect with in our music,” said Hileman, who is Professor of Bassoon at West Virginia University in Morgantown and Principal Bassoonist of the Binghamton Philharmonic. “Two bassoons together have such a wide degree of flexibility and sonorities available. It’s a unique and unexpected sound.”

The North Carolina-based Elliott, who has toured widely throughout the U.S., Europe and Australia with her group, Clogs, has also appeared in rock/pop and improvised settings over the past decade as a guest with The National, My Brightest Diamond and Sufjan Stevens, among others.

“We’ve nearly exhausted the catalog of new music for two bassoons,” said Elliott. “Now we are working with composers to write for Tuple. We premiered new music by the Australian composer Padma Newsome last spring, and we are looking forward to presenting even more new pieces in the coming season.”

That’s not to say that they have tired of Sofia Gubaidulina’s Duo Sonata from 1977, the oldest piece on their program. In fact, the work has a special place in Tuple’s repertoire: it is the first piece that Hileman and Elliott performed as a duo, and one with deep spirituality behind the music. Gubaidulina, one of the "Great Three" of contemporary Russian composers and a devout Orthodox Christian, has described her approach to composition as one that juxtaposes the earthly realm (expressed by guttural trills, micro-chromatic pitches and grinding dissonance) with the heavenly realm (represented by pure intervals, simple melodies and meditative stillness). By setting up such audible oppositions, she offers the audience and performers a clear window into the piece and its emotional content.

SCENE hosting a display for Breast Cancer Benefit

It's a Breast Thing: Champagne & In essence, The Hatch will provide a creative, co-working environment for prospective student entrepreneurs to develop their business ideas and ventures.

“The Hatch will create a social and innovative working environment for students, offering many of the services we provide to our business startups in the TIC, while also serving as an exciting alternative to working out of a home, library or coffee shop,” said East Lansing Project Manager Jeff Smith. “Our hope is that student entrepreneurs will find The Hatch to be a place where they can not only work on their own projects, but also collaborate with other members to increase the probability of their venture’s success.
